Anchored by its rocky hilltop overlooking the San Francisco skyline, Bernal Heights is often described as a “quaint urban village.” It has become increasingly desirable among professionals, but it offers something for everyone. Bernal Heights provides easy freeway access to Silicon Valley and the Peninsula, but transportation convenience isn’t the only attractive feature of this pleasant enclave.

Bernal Heights’ abundant sunshine and warmer temperatures belie the city’s foggy reputation, and it has no shortage of green space. Nature enthusiasts delight in the famed hilltop’s urban ecosystem; dog lovers abound in Bernal Heights Park, one of San Francisco’s largest — and unleashed — dog parks. For a change of “greenery,” head over to Precita Park or Holly Park.

Cortland Avenue is Bernal Heights’ main commercial strip, filled with bars, restaurants, bakeries, barbershops, salons, grocery stores, an award-winning brewery, and Alemany Farmers’ Market. Established in 1947, it’s one of the oldest farmers’ markets in the country and a neighborhood staple.

Real estate here is highly competitive, but with Victorian and Edwardian homes commingling with more contemporary finds, you’re sure to find something that suits your style while you fall in love with Bernal Heights.
